The 2nd Georgia
Christian University (GCU) Music Competition
Devoting all available resources to creating a better
educational environment and to opening professional opportunities to students, Georgia
Christian University, with its President Dr. Paul C. Kim, has been holding an Annual
Music Competition. The second GCU Annual Music Competition will be held in
November, 2013.
The GCU School of Music will host the music competition
from November 2nd to November 17th, 2013. This
competition is divided into 3 sections: Instrumental
Music (piano, string instruments, and wind instruments), Vocal Music, and
Korean Classical Music. The first qualifying round will be held on November 2nd
and November 3rd, 2013, and the second qualifying round will be held
on November 9th and November 10th, 2013. Both qualifying
rounds will be closed to the public. The finals will be held on November 17th,
2013 in the GCU auditorium and will be open to the public.
The competition is open to all elementary, middle,
and high school students of the State of Georgia. The deadline for the
submission of applications is October 25th, 2013. In addition, there
is an application fee of $30. The completed application form should be mailed to:

All performers, with the exception of pianists, are
required to bring an accompanist to the competition. Applicants should visit
the institution’s website (http://www.gcuniv.edu)
to obtain more information, including the list of songs and pieces of music of
the qualifying rounds of the competition.
GCU will award a gold, silver, and bronze medal in
each of the 3 sections of the competition. The winner of the competition will
be awarded a First Prize Certificate and $1,000, and each section will award
prize certificates and trophies. The First Prize winner will be given the
opportunity to perform in important and prestigious concerts at GCU.
To discover and select promising musicians with high
professional qualities, the GCU School of Music is conducting and directing an Annual
Music Festival composed of GCU’s finest instructors and students. This event is
expected to promote the importance of music education and to reveal interests
from prospective students.

GCU 음악대학의 천미선 학장은 뉴스앤포스트와 만난 자리에서 “3년전 제1회 경연대회에 비해 확장됐다”고 말했다. 천 교수는 “더 많은 학생들이 참여할 수 있도록 초등부를 새로 만들어 참가대상을 넓혔고, 성악부문과 국악부문도 새로 추가했다”고 설명했다.
참가부문은 피아노, 현악, 관악, 성악, 국악으로 각기 초등부, 중등부, 고등부로 나뉘어 자유곡을 연주하면 된다.
1차 예선은 오는 11월 2~3일, 2차 예선은 11월 9~10일에 열리며 본선 진출자는 11월17일 조지아 크리스찬 대학교 강당에서 전체 개상과 부문별 금-은-동상을 놓고 경합을 벌이게 된다.
접수마감은 오는 10월25일. 신청자는 GCU 학교 홈페이지 www.gcuniv.edu 에서 지원서를 다운받아 작성한 뒤 참가비 30달러와 함께 학교에 접수하면 된다.
천 교수는 “(경연대회를) 2년마다 개최해 조지아 지역의 많은 학생들이 정기적으로 참여할 수 있도록 만들 생각”이라면서 많은 학생들이 관심갖고 도전해 줄 것을 당부했다.
심사위원에는 GCU에서 가르치는 음대 교수들과 조지아주 음악계에서 활동하는 외부 교수들이 참여하게 되며, 부문별로 각 2명씩 심사할 예정이다.
1차 예선과 2차 예선은 다른 자유곡을 연주해야 하기 때문에, 참가학생은 처음부터 2곡을 준비하는 것이 좋다. 또한 모든 연주는 악보를 외워 연주해야 하고, 반주자는 참가자가 직접 구해야 한다.
영예의 대상 수상자에게는 상장 및 장학금 1000달러가 수여된다. 지역 음악경연대회 상금 중에선 최고수준이다. 부문별 금-은-동상 수상자들에게는 상장과 트로피가 주어지고, 모든 입상자들에게는 GCU가 개최하는 음악회에서 공개적으로 연주할 기회도 제공된다.
천 교수는 “음악을 공부하는 학생들이 많이 있는데, 나가서 연주하고 자랑할 기회가 별로 없는 것 같다”며 “축하해주고 격려해주고 이번을 계기로 많은 동기를 부여하고자 경연대회를 개최한다”고 밝히고, “잘하는 학생은 유망주로 서포트하고자 한다”고 덧붙였다.
이번 경연대회를 주최하는 GCU 음악대학은 기악과, 성악과, 작곡과, 교회음악과, 합창지휘과 등을 운영하고 있으며, 상당수의 졸업생들 이 애틀랜타 지역 교회에서 지휘자나 반주자로 활동하고 있다.
천 교수는 “상을 타는 것도 좋지만, 이런 기회에 나와서 연주도 하고, 그런 과정을 즐기면 좋겠다”면서 “음악 축제의 장처럼 즐겁게 즐겼으면 하는 것이 제 바램이다”고 말했다.
