Award-winning 'Thirst' to hit theaters in US
The Korean movie "Thirst" ("Bakjwi" in Korean) that clinched the Jury prize at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last month is soon to be released across the United States.
The film is directed by Park Chan-wook, who has gained acclaim from audiences and critics around the world for his unique storytelling and sensational imagery, and will hit theaters in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco on July 31.
Hollywood’s Focus Features, in charge of distributing the film, said it plans to expand release up to 80 theaters across the United States, depending on audience reaction in the three major US cities.
The American distributor also co-produced "Thirst" with Korea’s Moho Film, making the flick the first Korean film to be co-produced and co-invested by a major Hollywood production company from the very beginning.
"Thirst" tells the story of a Catholic priest who becomes a vampire after being given a strange blood transfusion during a medical experiment, and who starts a dangerous love affair with his friend’s wife.
The movie has drawn about 2.2 million viewers at home and has been sold to more than 10 countries including France, Greece, Turkey, Japan and Spain for screening worldwide later this year.
