K-Cinema Screening and Social: Detective K (July 11 & 25)
Amidst the intrigue of Joseon Dynasty era Korea, Detective K (Kim Myeong-min) rules as the country’s most brilliant -- and bumbling -- investigator. When a string of mysterious murders plagues the country, including the assassination of a governor and the apparent suicide of a lady, Detective K sets out with his sidekick Han Seo-pil (Oh Dal-soo) to crack the case. Signs point to the dangerously beautiful businesswoman Han Gaek-ju (Han Ji-min), but as they dig deeper, a disturbing secret could link the murders to a massive conspiracy aimed at the very nation of Joseon. Detective K (2011), directed by Kim Suk-yoon and based on the novel by Kim Tak-hwan, became the 4th best selling film of the year in Korea, winning audiences over with its Pirates of the Caribbean-style comedy and action. It won for Best Art Design at the Daejeon Film Awards and has been featured in the Jeonju International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, Seoul-Stockholm Korean Filmfestival, and The London Korean Film Festival.
